"There are no 'ordinary' people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations--these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit--immortal horrors or everlasting splendours." --C.S. Lewis

11 countries have laws against Holocaust denial.

Some argue that these laws violate free speech.  One man charged in Austria with a prison term for his denial of the Holocaust
said it was "ridiculous" that he was being tried for expressing an opinion.

In support of the laws,
Karen Pollock, chief executive of the UK's Holocaust Educational Trust remarked, "Holocaust denial is anti-Semitism dressed up as intellectual debate. It should be regarded as such and treated as such."

What do you think?

I think that the governments are right to prosecute these anti-semites. There is no point to the discussion of holocaust denial other than that. Expression of opinions can be slander, and if this is allowed to stand, on precedent, then what keeps me from bringing up and discussing the radical issues of eugenics used to justify slavery?

While I do agree that anyone denying the Holocaust is an anti-semite and is completely misguided, I do feel that the right to free speech is very important. Expression of opinions CAN be slander, but in this case, I am afraid that it is not. Regardless of how we feel towards those who may deny that this tragedy occurred, we cannot dismiss our rights. To speak of precedents, once the precedent is set that our right to free speech no longer applies in all situations, who knows what will stem from that? I am more worried about that than I am about having to put up with misguided people. I already do that often enough.
